List Of Documents Required To Apply For Pan Card Online.

To apply for a new PAN card, you need to submit certain documents like identity proof, address proof and date of birth proof. The requirement and validity of documents may vary from applicant to applicant as well as to the application purpose. Depending on the residential status of the applicant, Form 49A or Form 49AA has to be filled and submitted along with valid documents. Documents Required For Pan Card Application

The documents required for PAN card by different types of applicants vary as per the entity type for-

  • Individual Indian Citizen
  • Individual Foreign Citizen
  • Other then Individual

Documents Required For Pan Card for individual (Indian Citizen)

Identity card, birth certificate, and residential certificate are the three types of documents that are required by any Indian citizen or Hindu Undivided Family (HUF) for PAN application. For each proof, the Income Tax Department has suggested a list of documents.

Documents to be accepted as proof of identity –

  • voter id card
  • Passport
  • Aadhar Card
  • Ration card with applicant's photo
  • driving license
  • Photo ID card issued by the Central Government, State Government or any Public Sector Undertaking
  • A certificate issued by a bank bearing the applicant's photograph and bank account no.

  • Pensioner card copy with applicant's photograph

Original copy of the following document:

  • Identity certificate in the prescribed format signed by Member of Legislative Assembly, Member of Parliament, Municipal Councilor or Gazetted Officer
  • Bank statement on letterhead from the bank branch with the name and stamp of the issuing officer and attested photograph of the applicant and bank account no.

Additional important points:

(i) In the case of a minor applicant, ideally the identity card of the parent/guardian shall be considered as the proof of identity and address for the minor applicant.

(ii) in the case of HUF, an affidavit by the Karta of the HUF showing the names, father's name and address of all the heirs as on the date of application, shall serve as proof of identity

Note: Utility bills and bank/credit card information should be recent, not more than three months old.

Documents to be accepted as proof of date of birth –

  • Birth certificate issued by any office which is authorized to issue birth as well as death certificate, such as a municipal authority
  • Birth Certificate issued by Embassy of India
  • Matriculation certificate from a recognized society
  • Aadhar Card
  • driving license
  • Passport
  • Certificate of marriage issued from the marriage registration office
  • pension payment order
  • Domicile certificate issued by the Government of India or any State Government
  • Affidavit stating the date of birth signed before a magistrate
  • Photo Identity Card issued by the Central Government or State Government or Central Public Sector Undertaking or State Public Sector Undertaking

Documents Required For Pan Card for individual (Foreign Citizen)

The documents required by individuals and HUFs who are not citizens of India for PAN card application are slightly different as compared to those who are citizens of India. There is no need for these applicants to submit the birth certificate, they only need to submit proof of identity and address. Here is the list of acceptable documents –

Documents accepted as proof of identity

  • Passport
  • OCI cards which are allotted by the Government of India
  • PIO card allotted by Government of India
  • Other Citizenship ID Number, National ID Number, Taxpayer ID Number (any of these) – to be properly attested by “Apostille” or any official of Indian Embassy/High Commission/Consulate in the applicant’s home country

Documents that are accepted as a residence certificate

  • Passport
  • PIO card allotted by Government of India
  • OCI card allotted by Government of India
  • Non-Resident External Bank Account Information in India
  • Bank account information from the country where the applicant resides
  • Certificate of Registration issued by the Foreigners Registration Office bearing an Indian address
  • Other Citizenship ID Number or National ID Number, Taxpayer ID Number – (Any of these) to be attested by either “Apostille” or any Indian Embassy/High Commission/Consulate in the home country of the applicant. Visa granted by any foreign country as well as a letter of appointment issued by an Indian company or an original certificate of address in India issued by the employer

Documents Required For Pan Card for incorporated Companies in india

The term "company" includes—
  • company
  • partnership firm
  • limited liability partnership
  • trust
  • association of persons
  • body of persons
  • local authority
  • artificial judicial person

The documents below can serve as a proof of identity as well as a proof of address for companies –

  • Company:-     Copy of Certificate of Registration issued by Registrar of Companies 
  • Partnership Firm:- Copy of Certificate of Registration issued by the Registrar of Firms or Copy of Partnership

  • Limited Liability Partnership:- Copy of Registration Certificate issued by the Registrar of LLP Copy of Trust Deed or Certificate of Registration No issued by Charity Commissioner

  • Trust:- Copy of Trust Deed or Certificate of Registration No issued by Charity Commissioner

  • Association of persons, the body of persons, local authority, or artificial judicial person:- Copy of Certificate of Partnership or Certificate of Registration issued by Charity Commissioner or Registrar of Co-operative Societies or any other Competent Authority or any other document issued by any other Central Government or State Government to establish the identity and address of such person

Documents required for PAN card application by assessees other than individuals

Firms or associations of persons that do not have any offices in India, the following are the documents required for the application of PAN card –

Documents to be accepted as proof of identity

  • Company Registration Certificate issued in the country where the applicant resides and duly attested by “Apostille” or High Commission or Consulate of India located in applicant’s country or any other authorized officials of Scheduled Foreign Entities registered in India
  • Certificate of Registration issued in India or approved by Indian Authority for setting up an office in India

Documents that are accepted as proof of address

  • Certificate of registration issued in the country of residence of the applicant, attested by “Apostille” or Embassy of India or High Commission or Consulate in the country in which the applicant is resident or which is authorized or authorized by foreign branches of scheduled banks registered in India attested by the officer
  • Certificate of Registration issued in India or approval granted by Indian authorities to establish an office in India

  • Applicants must ensure that these certificates follow the format prescribed by the Income Tax authorities


The above documents are the documents required for the application of a PAN card for those forms who are not registered in India but are doing business in the country. In case such business entities do not possess the mandatory documents mentioned above, they can obtain it by contacting the concerned authority in the same country where the company was initially registered.
